What Yiwu is
Yiwu is a city in Zhejiang province built around a wholesale market complex of tens of thousands of booths, organised by category. Toys, stationery, jewellery, hair accessories, kitchen gadgets, seasonal and festive goods, luggage, small electronics accessories — the long tail of inexpensive consumer products.
Most booths are trading agents for factories in the surrounding region rather than the factories themselves. That is not a flaw in the model; it is the model. The market exists so a buyer can assemble an order across hundreds of product types without negotiating with hundreds of factories.

What Yiwu is not good for
Customisation. A Yiwu booth sells what it has, and the further you move from the stock product, the less the model fits. Genuine private label — your specification, your tooling, your exclusivity — belongs at a factory, not at a market booth.
Consistency between orders. The same booth may source the same product from a different factory next season, and the second batch will not necessarily match the first. For a product you intend to build a brand on, that is a real problem.
And quality at the top of a category. Yiwu is priced for volume at low cost, which is exactly what it should be. If your positioning depends on the product feeling expensive, source it elsewhere.
