What Alibaba does well
It solves discovery and payment, which are genuinely hard problems. You can find suppliers in almost any category, message them in English, and pay through an escrow arrangement that holds your money until the order is marked delivered. For a first order at low value, that is often enough.

What the badges mean
Gold Supplier is a paid membership. It means the supplier pays for the tier, which is a weak signal of commitment and no signal at all of quality. Verified Supplier involves a third-party inspection of the company, which is more meaningful and still tells you about the company rather than about your product.
Trade Assurance protects the transaction: it can return your money if the order is not delivered or does not match the agreed terms. It does not inspect your goods, and a batch that is defective but matches the order description is not what it is for.
None of that makes the platform bad. It makes it a marketplace rather than a quality system, which is what it has always said it is.
